Laser hair removal has become one of the most popular and effective treatments for unwanted hair. But, like many cosmetic treatments, misinformation triumphs.

To set the record straight, we’ve debunked the top laser hair removal myths so that you can make an informed choice on your hair removal journey!

Myth 1 - Laser Hair Removal Is Only for People With Light Skin & Dark Hair

Fact - Modern laser technology is safe and effective for a wide range of skin types and hair colours.

Older lasers worked best on fair skin with dark hair due to the contrast, but modern advancements, like the Nd:YAG laser, have made the treatment safe and effective for a variety of skin tones. With a longer wavelength, the Nd:YAG targets hair follicles while minimising skin damage.

Darker hair still achieves the best results, but laser hair removal is now suitable for most skin tones and hair colours, from fair to dark skin and blonde to red hair.

Myth 2 - Laser Hair Removal Is Painful & Uncomfortable

Fact - Laser hair removal is much less painful than you might think.

Laser hair removal isn’t pain-free, but most people find it tolerable, often comparing it to a rubber band snap. Modern lasers like the Diode and Alexandrite feature cooling mechanisms to enhance comfort during treatment.

Sensitive areas like the bikini line or underarms may feel slightly more intense, but the discomfort is brief. Sessions last a few minutes to an hour, with minimal downtime and most clients resuming normal activities right after.

Myth 3 - Laser Hair Removal Works After One Session

Fact - Multiple sessions are required for optimal results.

While one session can reduce hair, laser hair removal requires multiple treatments because hair grows in different phases. It’s most effective during the growth phase when hair contains the most pigment, but not all hairs are in this phase at once.

Typically, 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart are recommended for optimal results, though this varies by hair and skin type. Afterward, occasional touch-ups can help maintain smooth, hair-free skin.

Myth 4 - Laser Hair Removal Will Cause Scarring

Fact - When done properly by a trained professional, laser hair removal doesn’t cause scarring.

Laser hair removal is non-invasive and doesn’t involve cutting or tissue removal. When performed by a qualified practitioner with the right equipment, the risk of scarring is extremely low. Temporary redness or swelling may occur but usually fades within hours.

To reduce risks and ensure the best results, avoid sun exposure before and after treatment and follow your practitioner’s aftercare instructions.

Myth 5 - Laser Hair Removal Is Too Expensive

Fact - While the upfront cost of laser hair removal can be higher than waxing or shaving, it’s actually more cost-effective in the long run.

When you factor in the lifetime cost of razors, waxing appointments and depilatory creams, laser hair removal actually becomes a more cost-effective solution over time.

Yes, there’s an initial investment, but because laser hair removal offers permanent hair reduction, you’ll save money by not having to book frequent waxing sessions or buy razors and shaving cream regularly.

Myth 6 - Laser Hair Removal Only Works For Large Areas

Fact - Laser hair removal can be performed on both large and small areas of the body.

Laser hair removal is incredibly versatile, meaning it’s not just for large areas like the legs or back. You can treat smaller, more delicate areas, such as the upper lip, chin, bikini line, underarms or even the eyebrows. The treatment is customised based on the area you want to treat, and your practitioner will adjust the settings accordingly to ensure the best results.

Myth 7 - Laser Hair Removal Is Only For Women

Fact - Laser hair removal is equally effective for men.

Laser hair removal isn’t just for women. Many men are opting for laser treatments to eliminate unwanted body hair, whether it’s on the back, chest, arms or face. Laser hair removal is a great option for men who want to achieve a clean, smooth look without the hassle of shaving or waxing regularly.

Myth 8 - You Can’t Get Laser Hair Removal On Darker Skin

Fact - Laser technology has evolved, and treatments are now safe for all skin types, including dark skin.

Laser hair removal used to be more effective for people with lighter skin and dark hair due to the way lasers target pigment. However, modern laser technology has made it possible to safely treat all skin types, including dark skin.

Nd:YAG lasers use longer wavelengths that penetrate deeper into the skin, reducing the risk of damaging the skin while still effectively targeting hair follicles.

Myth 9 - Laser Hair Removal Requires A Lot Of Downtime

Fact - There’s minimal downtime after laser hair removal.

Unlike more invasive treatments, laser hair removal has little to no downtime. You can typically resume your normal activities immediately after treatment, though you may experience some redness or mild swelling in the treated area. This usually fades within a few hours.
